**Scope of Position:**

The Personal Trainer II will be responsible for designing safe and appropriate exercise programs for members as they participate in fitness and sports programs at The Kroc Center in Salem, OR. The Personal Trainer II will conduct one-on-one fitness training, group fitness training, and class-sized fitness instruction for clients as assigned by the Sports and Fitness Coordinator. The activities of the members and guests they oversee will take place in all fitness spaces along with any meeting rooms and the natatorium as assigned by the Sports and Fitness Coordinator. The Personal Trainer II will also be responsible for conducting fitness equipment orientations, fitness assessments, fitness program design, and ensure the safe exercise and equipment operation of all facility members and guests when not currently engaged in a personal training appointment.

**Qualifications:**

**Education and/or Experience:**

This position requires an individual that is enthusiastic, with a positive attitude who has experience in customer service, facility cleanliness, and sound judgment. A current nationally recognized accredited personal trainer certification is required. A 4-year degree in the field of Sports and Fitness is preferred. A minimum of one year of prior experience in personal Training and/or group training & exercise instruction and/or fitness & exercise education is preferred. Prior experience with fitness, sports, and/or recreation is required. Current First Aid, CPR and AED certification is also required or the ability to obtain the Certifications within 30 days of employment. It is the employees responsibility to maintain and keep current on all certifications. Experience in a non-profit organization preferred.

**Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:**

**Professional:** The person in this position must have the ability to interact with co-workers and the public in a positive, professional manner in conformity with The Salvation Army Mission Statement. The person in this position must be able to cultivate teamwork both in the fitness department and the facility as a whole. They must also be able to work with supervision and in a team setting with other professionals. Must be able to exercise good judgment and be comfortable working with members and guests of diverse backgrounds and circumstances.

**Equipment Used:** The following equipment is used on either a daily, weekly or monthly basis: Telephone, computer fax/copy machines, and computer time sheet. Familiar with current Microsoft software computer programs including Word, Excel, Access, Publisher, PowerPoint, e-mail, and internet. This position must have a good understanding of all fitness, weight and cardio equipment and their proper use and instruction.

**Skills and Abilities:** Effective understanding of fitness and exercise principles, methods, and instruction. Good knowledge of anatomy, physiology, nutrition, and health. Effective verbal and written communications skills, ability to multi task, and the ability to fill-in for co-workers as the work schedule requires. Requires the ability to follow directives of the designated supervisor. Good knowledge of fitness/gym equipment required. Ability to initiate code blue emergency call or respond to an emergency situation if one arises.

**Organization:** The ability to design and implement a detailed exercise program schedule with adequate progression, rest, and variety. Must be able to maintain a Client Training Log. Must be able to initiate or respond in writing to any incident response, unusual occurrence, or safety concern within the facility grounds while on duty.

**Essential Duties and Responsibilities:**

* Create safe and appropriate exercise programs for clients with oversight of Sports and Fitness Coordinator

* Design a goal-setting strategy for the client and an action plan to achieve these goals with oversight of Sports and Fitness Coordinator, and or prepare a class that is safe and effective for the demographic of the class

* Must be proficient at instructing a safe, fun and effective program or class

* Ensure proper exercise mode, duration, frequency, intensity, and progression is established for every client or in general class setting. Sports and Fitness Coordinator will evaluate regularly

* Monitor clients during exercise session to ensure safety

* Ensure safe and proper usage of all exercise equipment

* Return all exercise equipment to their proper storage spaces

* Ensure all pre-exercise paperwork, waivers, and consents are completed

* Ensure all billing, fee schedules, and payroll forms are properly completed

* Conduct pre-exercise health screening for new members and guests

* Conduct fitness equipment orientations for new members

* Demonstrate proper exercise technique

* Conduct fitness assessments and explain testing outcomes to client

* Problem-solve, answer basic facility questions, and provide assistance to members and guests as needed

* Arrive for work shift on time, prepared to work, and ready for each personal training or class session

* Refer any questions, concerns, or complaints by clients to the Sports and Fitness Coordinator

* Monitor Fitness/Gym areas for any safety problems and promptly report any problems/concerns to the Sports and Fitness Coordinator or other designated supervisor

* Contribute to monthly personal training revenue goals that are set by the Sports and Fitness Coordinator or Personal Trainer Lead

* Follow all written and oral communications and instructions from the Sports and Fitness Coordinator or other designated supervisor

* Work at least on shift per week as a Fitness/Gym Attendant

**Physical Requirements:**

Must be well groomed and adhere to the required dress code

Must be able to perform tasks of a repetitive nature without diminished performance.

Must be able to walk, bend, stoop, squat, twist body, stand for short/long periods of time, kneel, push, pull, have sense of touch, reach, grasp with hands and fingers, lifting and carrying up to 45 pounds unassisted, climb stairs, close vision, distant vision, talk, hear, have hand-eye coordination, have manual dexterity, speak and read, and working in noisy areas, as these movements are a regular requirement for this position.

Must be able to demonstrate appropriate form when using equipment typical of a fitness facility. This equipment includes, but is not limited to: cardiovascular equipment, selectorized weights, free weights, and pulley systems.
