GENERAL SUMMARY Salary: $15.23/hr. minimum - $18.02/hr. midpoint (Depending on qualifications) To plan, organize, market and deliver programming for the Florence Ranch Homestead and Opal Lawrence Historical Park for the City of Mesquite; to coordinate facility usage; engage in educational tours with Mesquite ISD, other school districts and other outlets, such as homeschools and daycares; work with other outlets such as adult groups for tours; be aware of maintenance issues at the park; recruit and train volunteer workforce; supervise any additional park coordinators hired as needed; assist in social media campaigns; open Opal Lawrence Historical Park one Saturday a month for the public; be flexible in time spent between properties as tours evolve.
This position requires no more than 1,000 hours per year. SUPERVISION General supervision is provided by the Manager of Historical Preservation.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES - All behaviors comply with the Code of Conduct and Rules of Behavior outlined in Chapter 8 of the General Government Policies and Procedures Manual.
- All behaviors comply with the general Code of Conduct for Museums and with the Ethics code as set forth by the American Alliance of Museums.
- Manage the operation of Opal Lawrence Historical Park within a typical 20-hour work week, with the exception of one Saturday per month and assist the Florence Ranch Homestead Coordinator in being successful in his/her position.
- Recruit and coordinate volunteer activities; regularly update scripts for docents; develop a variety of tour choices based on size and age of visitors; train all volunteers; and secure signed volunteer agreements.
- Regularly report to the Manager of Historical Preservation any observation of maintenance issues and needs for budgetary items.
- Supervise any additional staff hired to coordinate hours at either property.
- Assist in the coordination of facility usage, fundraising events and special events.
- Treat all house furnishings with standard museum artifact handling procedures and set up regular conservation times.
- Work with the school districts in bringing school tours to the facility for educational programming.
- Coordinate group tours.
- Market the facility within the Metroplex and to all points east. Keep records of out-of-town visitors and an attendance listing.
- Assist office staff in creating and posting events, marketing pieces and other information on social media outlets, such as Facebook and Instagram.
- Be able to work evenings and weekends when needed.
- Be able to work independently with little daily supervision.
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS EDUCATION Bachelor's degree in Historic Preservation, Museum Science, Urban Planning, Public Administration or related field is preferred.
EXPERIENCE Two years of increasingly responsible experience in historical preservation, business management, community/volunteer services, social services, or another related field.
Professional level work or municipal experience may substitute for bachelor's degree requirement. One year of professional level work experience may be substituted for each year of required education, up to a maximum substitution of four years. A High School Diploma or GED is required when substituting professional level work experience for the bachelor's degree requirement.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES Possession of a valid driver's license.
WORK SCHEUDLE Part time hours, 10:30AM-3:30PM, Tuesday-Friday
Occasional Saturdays, other mornings, weekends, and evenings as needed for events and tours
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS / WORK ENVIRONMENT Part Time and Seasonal Employees: PARS ARS 457 Plan enrollment is mandatory for part-time and seasonal employees who work less than 1,000 hours per year.
Each pay period, 6.2% of wages will be deducted from pay and deposited into your PARS ARS account. Contributions are made on a pre-tax basis.
Each pay period, the City will also contribute the equivalent of 1.3% of wages into a PARS ARS account. Employer contributions are deposited on a pre-tax basis.
There is no contribution to Social Security Administration.
