Position Summary:

The Data Scientist position will support the ongoing research project that primarily focuses on field and laboratory research studies on improved crop management practices that can sustain yields and protect the environment in the Lower Mississippi River Delta. The position will provide data science, advanced analytical support, technical expertise, and process-based modeling. This position will serve as a greenhouse gas (GHG) flux modeler of the research collaboration between the USDA-ARS and A-State. The scientist will work closely with USDA-ARS researchers to refine the GHG flux model that automatically computes greenhouse gas emissions from agricultural crops using gas analyzers and chamber flux method. This position will create executable programs of the model to fit all computer operating systems for public use and assess the feedback of GHG flux model users to improve succeeding versions of the model.

Duties & Responsibilities:

• Design and develop complex scientific modeling applications to automate the computation of atmospheric gas emissions in agriculture
• Apply advanced computational modeling, data analytics, machine learning, and scientific visualization to the innovative estimates of C footprint in irrigated crops
• Refine software for calculation and modeling of greenhouse gas emissions from agronomic crops
• Conduct data analysis and inferential statistics to learn about the utility of GHG software to public users
• Create and maintain a website of the model

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Expert in C/C++, Python, JAVAscript, proficient in data science and visualization tools such as pandas, scipy, plotly, dash, SALib, seaborn, artificial intelligence and machine learning such as scikit-learn, Keras, GIS image analysis such as ArcGIS, Python-based integration tools and web mappings such as OpenLayers, Leaflet and Mapserver.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in handling large datasets
Experience in working on greenhouse gas emission datasets

Minimum Qualifications:

An earned PhD in Engineering Science, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Data Science, or related fields.
